WHAT IS AN ADU?

What qualifies as an ADU in California?

Before getting into legislation, let's see what is considered to be an ADU in California. According to the ADU Handbook developed by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), ADUs are housing units with complete independent living facilities for one or more persons.

What does the term ADU mean?

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are an innovative and effective option for adding much needed housing in California. ADUs have been known by many names: granny flats, in-law units, backyard cottages, secondary units and more.

Stanislaus County is encouraging homeowners to build an

accessory dwelling unit, or ADU.

The county is collaborating with the

cities of Modesto,

Oakdale, Riverbank, Turlock, and Waterford

and a local architecture firm to create free

and pre-approved plans

for residents to expedite the process.

What is the NEW LAW in California for ADU?

Assembly Bill 68 allows landlords and homeowners to add 2 more units – an ADU and a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) – on any residential lot. This means you can legally create a triplex on every single lot (if your lot meets size and setback requirements) according to the 2024 ADU laws in California
